Vivo X Fold 5: First Waterproof and Dustproof Foldable Phone

Mobile Technology

The mobile phone market is witnessing a significant advancement in foldable phone technology. Vivo, a prominent player in the industry, is poised to launch a device that sets a new benchmark for durability within the foldable segment. The upcoming Vivo X Fold 5 is set to be the first foldable smartphone to boast both water and dust resistance.

Enhanced Protection

Vivo executive Han Boxiao recently announced on Weibo that the X Fold 5 will carry an IP5X rating for dust resistance, and an IPX8 rating for water resistance. This surpasses existing foldable offerings, many of which only feature IPX8 water resistance, lacking dust protection altogether. The device also boasts an IPX9 rating, meaning it can withstand high-pressure, hot water jets. This level of protection is unprecedented in the foldable phone market, significantly narrowing the durability gap between foldable and traditional smartphones.

Industry First?

While Boxiao claims industry-first status for dust resistance in a foldable, this statement requires some clarification. Other manufacturers have introduced foldables with some level of dust protection, though not to the same degree as the X Fold 5’s IP5X rating. The Vivo device is nevertheless setting a higher standard in terms of combined water and dust resistance.

The X Fold 5’s remarkable durability is further demonstrated by its ability to withstand 1,000 open-and-close cycles while submerged in up to one meter of water. While the practicality of such a feature may be debated, it undeniably showcases the phone's robust construction.

This represents a considerable leap forward for foldable phones, addressing a longstanding concern about their susceptibility to damage. The increased durability offered by the X Fold 5's IP ratings suggests a greater confidence in the long-term reliability of foldable technology.
