It appears Apple is getting serious about AI. Word on the street is that they're planning a major overhaul for Siri, transforming it into a full-fledged chatbot. I think that's a good response to what's happening with tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. Let's be honest, the current version of Siri isn't exactly blowing anyone away and it needs a real upgrade.

From what I understand, this new Siri – currently codenamed "Campos" – is slated to arrive with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. It will completely replace the Siri we all know (or maybe tolerate) now. Think of it as having a ChatGPT-like experience built right into your Apple devices, accessible with the usual "Hey Siri" or by holding the side button.

I've also heard that Apple is tinkering with it as a standalone app during testing, but it will be part of the operating system, not something you download from the App Store. More interesting is that Apple is leaning towards using a customized model based on Google's Gemini to power this new chatbot. Now, that's a collaboration I didn't see coming!

What Will the New Siri Be Able to Do?

Well, from the reports, it sounds like a lot. We're talking about a Siri that can search the web, conjure up images, give you a hand with coding, summarize lengthy documents, and even analyze files you upload. Imagine asking Siri to summarize a research paper or help you debug a piece of code – that's the kind of power we're potentially looking at. It should learn more about the user and it will give more personal results.

Also, I'm particularly excited about the rumored ability for Siri to "see" what's on your screen and adjust device settings accordingly. For example, you could tell Siri to turn on dark mode or increase the font size without having to dig through menus.

Moreover, the new Siri should be integrated across all Apple apps, like Photos, Mail, Messages, Music, and TV. It should have the ability to access and analyze the content within those apps to give us better answers and suggestions. Imagine asking Siri to find all the photos from your last vacation or to play a specific song from your favorite artist.

One thing that Apple is considering, is how much the new Siri will remember. Current chatbots are able to remember past conversations to have personalized answers, but Apple will limit Siri memory for privacy reasons.

The current plan is to officially unveil this revamped Siri at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, with public testing of iOS 27 kicking off shortly after. It sounds like this Siri chatbot will be the marquee feature of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. The company will focus on improving performance.
