Samsung's Tri-Foldable: Running Three Apps at Once with One UI 8
Samsung's been cooking up a multi-fold device, and it seems like we're getting a sneak peek at its software. The rumor mill is churning, and the latest buzz suggests some interesting features coming with One UI 8 specifically tailored for this triple-screen foldable.
One of the standout features? Apparently, you'll be able to run three apps side-by-side. Which makes perfect sense, right? A bigger screen real estate means you can comfortably multitask without feeling cramped. Instead of constantly switching between apps, you can have them all open at once. Think of it as having multiple windows open on your computer, but on your phone.
The report also mentions that you can "drop" this trio of split-screen apps onto your home screen or taskbar. My guess is that it'll be a shortcut to launch them all at once, similar to how app pairs work on current foldables. It's all about making multitasking as seamless and intuitive as possible.
Furthermore, Samsung's tri-fold might also borrow the cover screen mirroring functionality from the Z Fold line. Currently, the Z Fold lets you have different home screen layouts for each screen. The tri-fold could potentially let you put two cover display home pages side-by-side on the main screen. I can't wait to see if we'll be able to put three home pages from the smartphone display next to each other on the main screen!
With the expected launch date for the tri-fold device coming in late 2025, it's clear that Samsung is in the final stages of development. However, I'm really interested in knowing about app support on this larger form factor. It wasn't that long ago that apps like Instagram and Twitter looked terrible on foldable phone screens. It would be great to see that most used Apps have been optimized for this new format.
