Pixel Battery Health Feature Extends Battery Life
Google is preparing to launch a significant new feature designed to extend the lifespan of Pixel phone batteries. This feature, discovered through an APK teardown, will dynamically adjust charging voltage and speed based on battery usage and age.
The feature, initially optional on Pixel 9 models, will likely be integrated into the standard settings menu under Battery Health. While optional on some devices, it's anticipated to be mandatory on the Pixel 9a. The technology is expected to make its official debut with the release of Android 16 this summer.
How the Feature Works
The system operates by subtly modifying the maximum battery voltage over time. This adjustment, beginning around 200 charge cycles and continuing up to 1000, aims to mitigate the effects of battery degradation and maintain consistent performance. As the battery ages, the charging speed will be automatically adjusted to compensate for reduced capacity. While users will not have direct control over the settings, the system is designed to optimize the battery's health and performance throughout its lifecycle. This should translate to a longer period before a battery replacement is needed.
Rollout and Availability
Although not yet publicly released, the recent addition of necessary parameters within the Settings Services app on the Pixel 9 suggests an imminent rollout. The feature’s integration with Android 16 further supports this expectation of a summer release. The feature's arrival is a significant development for Pixel users, promising enhanced battery longevity and performance.
