iPhone 18 Pro: New Leak Suggests Smaller Dynamic Island, Under-Display Face ID
The rumor mill has been churning about the iPhone 18 Pro's front design for months. I've been following the leaks and reports, and it's been a bit of a rollercoaster. Some whispers from the supply chain suggested under-display Face ID, while others pointed to a top-left hole-punch camera. The big question was whether the Dynamic Island would shrink, shift, or vanish altogether.
Now, a new leak from Instant Digital on Weibo seems to be clearing things up. Apparently, they shared an image of a Face ID sensor assembly. It looks like it's made up of three parts on a single flex cable: an infrared flood illuminator on the left, and a dot projector and infrared camera in the center and to the right.
If this leak is accurate, it seems that only the flood illuminator (the smallest and simplest part) will go under the display in the top-left corner. The dot projector and infrared camera? They're likely to stay in a smaller, pill-shaped Dynamic Island, along with the selfie camera. So, it seems that the Dynamic Island will remain for a while.
I remember last month, when The Information said that the front camera would move to the top-left corner, supposedly getting rid of the pill-shaped cutout. It looks like Instant Digital is challenging that idea. We'll see what happens, but this new leak does make a bit more sense to me.
Update: Also, the X account "ShrimpApplePro," which has accurately leaked some details about Apple devices in the past, has corroborated today's leak, which gives me some confidence.
If Apple sticks to its usual schedule, we should see the iPhone 18 Pro models in September. Assuming no more conflicting rumors pop up, this might be a pretty good idea of what the front display will look like. It's always fun to speculate, but it'll be even better when we finally see the real thing! I'm expecting a great iPhone.
