iOS 26 Improves CarPlay Experience

Mobile Technology

Apple recently unveiled iOS 26, introducing a suite of new features and refinements specifically designed to enhance the CarPlay in-car experience. The first developer beta is currently available, with a public beta slated for release next month. A full rollout is expected later this year.

Visual Overhaul and Enhanced User Interface

The update introduces a visually striking Liquid Glass design to the CarPlay interface, mirroring the aesthetic changes seen in the latest iOS iterations. This includes more vibrant, shimmery app icons and translucent UI elements for a more refined and modern look. The overall effect is a more polished and intuitive user experience.

Improved Messaging Capabilities

iOS 26 significantly improves the CarPlay messaging experience. Users can now respond to messages directly through CarPlay using standard Tapbacks—emojis like hearts, thumbs up, or exclamation points—eliminating the need to switch away from the road. The update also incorporates the ability to view pinned conversations, ensuring easy access to essential communications.

Streamlined Phone Calls and Enhanced Dashboard Functionality

Incoming phone calls in CarPlay now utilize a more compact view, preventing them from obstructing other essential on-screen information like navigation instructions. Furthermore, the CarPlay Dashboard screen will now support Live Activities, offering a glanceable view of real-time data such as flight arrival times.

Widgets and Customization

A notable addition is the introduction of a customizable widgets screen to standard CarPlay, previously a feature exclusive to the premium CarPlay Ultra. This allows users to personalize their CarPlay experience with widgets for various functionalities including calendar appointments and HomeKit device controls.

In summary, iOS 26's CarPlay improvements promise a more visually appealing, efficient, and personalized in-car experience.
