iOS 18 Adoption Exceeds Expectations

Mobile Technology

Apple has reported significant adoption rates for iOS 18, exceeding those of its predecessor, iOS 17, within the same timeframe last year. The latest figures reveal that iOS 18 is currently installed on 88 percent of iPhones released in the last four years (iPhone 13 and later models), and an impressive 82 percent of all active iPhones.

This represents a substantial increase since January, when the figures stood at 76 percent and 68 percent respectively. The accelerated adoption rate is noteworthy, especially when compared to iOS 17's performance in June 2024, where only 86 percent of iPhones from the past four years and 77 percent of all active iPhones ran the update.

iPadOS 18 Adoption Also Strong

The positive trend extends to iPadOS 18. Apple's data shows an 81 percent adoption rate among iPads released in the last four years and a 71 percent adoption rate across all active iPads. This, too, surpasses the adoption rates of iPadOS 17 in June 2024 (77 percent and 68 percent respectively).

Several factors may be contributing to the increased adoption. New features introduced in iOS 18, such as Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, and notification summaries, may have enhanced user experience and encouraged upgrades. Apple's commitment to software updates is highlighted as a key differentiator, offering users continued value and security enhancements over the lifespan of their devices. The company emphasizes the synergy between its hardware and software, enabling this extended support and regular feature additions.

The upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference will unveil the successor to iOS 18, promising further innovations. While details remain limited, early reports suggest potential major design changes and new features.
