Google Kills Assistant Driving Mode in Maps, Focuses on Gemini
Google has officially confirmed the discontinuation of Assistant Driving Mode within its Maps application for Android. This move, initially observed by users as a potential error, has been attributed to Google's broader strategy of phasing out Assistant in favor of Gemini, its advanced AI model.
The removal of Assistant Driving Mode follows a previous reduction in functionality last year, when the app launcher was removed, leaving users with a simplified voice bar. The complete disappearance of the feature, however, came as a surprise to many, particularly given the absence of an immediate replacement.
The now-defunct Driving Mode, when active, presented a black bar at the bottom of the Maps interface, offering convenient access to essential functions. Users could leverage Assistant to read incoming messages, receive call notifications, and manage media playback, all without diverting their attention from driving.
While the immediate future of in-car Assistant functionality remains uncertain, Google has indicated that Gemini will eventually be integrated into both Android Auto and Android Automotive. Further details and insights into this transition are expected to be unveiled during Google I/O 2025, scheduled for May 20-21.
The decision to sunset Assistant Driving Mode underscores Google's commitment to evolving its AI ecosystem, even if it means discontinuing features that some users have come to rely upon. The company's bet on Gemini suggests a belief that a more advanced AI model can deliver a superior and more integrated in-car experience in the long run.
