I've been following display tech for a while now, and it seems Apple is gearing up for a big change with its foldable iPhone. Word on the street is that they're planning to use a new type of OLED display made by Samsung called CoE (Color Filter on Encapsulation). What's so special about it? Well, it could make the screen brighter and thinner.

You see, regular OLED panels have a polarizing film on top to reduce reflections and make the image look sharper. However, this film also blocks some of the light from the OLED itself, which means the display isn't as bright as it could be and consumes more power.

With CoE, Apple would ditch the polarizing film altogether. Instead, they'd put the color filter directly on top of the layer that protects the OLED. The impact of this is that more light can pass through, resulting in a brighter display without needing extra power. Plus, removing layers also translates to a thinner overall design.

The report suggests that Apple might first use this CoE technology in its foldable iPhone, possibly coming out in late 2026. After that, they could bring it to the iPhone Air 2 in 2027. However, there's a twist: apparently, the iPhone Air 2's release has been delayed because the original iPhone Air didn't sell as well as expected.

Now, here's the interesting part: whether Apple actually uses CoE and whether the iPhone Air 2 even gets released will be decided sometime this year. It all hinges on how things pan out, so keep an eye out for more news around the third quarter.

Samsung isn't sitting still either. They're planning to use CoE, which they call OCF (On-Cell Film), in their foldable Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models, as well as the Galaxy S26 Ultra, expected early next year. This would make the S26 Ultra Samsung's first regular smartphone to feature this technology, not just foldables.

In my opinion, this is a smart move by both Apple and Samsung. Brighter, thinner displays are always welcome, and CoE could be a key step in making our devices even better. Let's see how it all unfolds!
