Apple's 20th Anniversary iPhone: The Camera Could Be Hidden Under the Display!
I've been following Apple's moves closely, and I think it's fascinating how they're approaching the under-display camera technology. According to a Chinese leaker, we might see Apple finally conceal the front-facing camera under the screen by 2027. I'm talking about the 20th anniversary iPhone, expected to have no visible cutouts. It's a bold step, aligning with previous reports.
The leaker, who goes by Digital Chat Station on Weibo, suggests that the under-screen camera development is on track for that 2027 release. They believe it will come one year after the under-screen Face ID tech debuts on the iPhone 18 Pro models. It's a calculated move, as I see it, and they are probably aiming to get everything right.
Let's be real, several Android phones have already dabbled in under-display selfie cameras. But I noticed the image quality often takes a hit because of the display layers. Apple probably hasn't jumped on the bandwagon because of this quality concern. However, they've reportedly been working on their own solution for a while. We might even see it in Apple's first foldable iPhone as early as next year. If it comes to pass, it will be revolutionary.
According to reports, LG Innotek – one of Apple's Korean suppliers – has been developing these cameras to be completely invisible when inactive. That's interesting, isn't it? The systems use a "freeform optic" multiple lens array. It is designed to reduce image distortion and improve brightness, compensating for the typical light loss. Will that be a game changer? Well, only time will tell...
Whether LG Innotek's work will be used in the foldable iPhone remains to be seen. JP Morgan reported that Apple's first foldable will have an industry-first 24-megapixel camera under the inner display. I mean, under-screen cameras typically use 4 or 8 megapixels, suggesting Apple has made serious improvements in light transmittance and image quality. It looks like they don't want to play games.
I also learned that Apple is reportedly working on a radical redesign for the 20th anniversary iPhone. It will feature a completely bezel-less display that curves around all four edges of the device. No bezels at all! Isn't that a great concept?
Finally, there's a strong expectation that Apple will skip "iPhone 19" nomenclature. For the 10th anniversary of the iPhone in 2017, Apple skipped the "iPhone 9" and simply launched the iPhone X (roman numeral for 10) alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Let's wait and see what happens.
